Angeles Crest Highway
Angeles Crest Highway/ Mt Wilson Observatory
The famous Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2) winds most of the length of the San Gabriel Mountains. This road reopened in 2011 after major reconstruction following the 2009 Station Fire.
Our mountain tour begins near the east end of Highway 2, passes by the Wrightwood ski resort and traverses a second of the San Andreas Fault. We drive West along the northern foothills in the high desert region of the Mojave Desert. We then ascend the Angeles Forest Highway to Angeles Crest Highway. All of these roads are well marked, well-engineered two lane roads, but they are very twisty and a delight for Porsche drivers.
As we head East, we’ll pass several places to stop and admire the views. Our lunch stop will be at the historic Newcomb Ranch, a roadhouse providing the only such facility in the Angeles Forest.
Following lunch, we will cross the highest point of the route. Depending on atmospheric conditions, there are spectacular views overlooking both the Los Angeles plain and the desert to the north. The mountain route will end where we started. There is an easy (quicker) return to our base hotel with a mid-afternoon arrival.
This tour is offered on Thursday and Friday. Lunch is on your own at Newcomb Ranch. There is a $10 per participant fee and a limit of 100 participants per day.
